The art of wax play is a delightful way to connect with a partner and great wax play is a joy to experience. Fortunately, it is easy to master. You just need to consider a few details to ensure you and your play partner have a safe, enjoyable experience.

  • The right candles

Don’t reach for a regular candle. The wax will be far too hot. You need to buy some soy candles, which melt at a little above 50 degrees Celsius. Fortunately, they are easy to find and come in a beautiful array of colours, from all shades of the rainbow to ones that glow under UV light! You can also buy wax jugs, which make for a controlled warm pour and give options for a different sensation. As it’s soy, check your partner isn’t allergic.

  • Safety – you are playing with fire!

Don’t forget that you will get caught up in the moment once you start. Make sure you have a solid, flame-proof base to stand them on, surfaces which will be easy to clean wax off (a shower curtain is good) and that you aren’t near curtains or other flammable materials. Keep your fire-extinguishing supplies handy and bear in mind that a long play session may make the floors slippery afterwards. A sensitive smoke alarm may also go off, so ensure the area is well ventilated, unless evacuating naked is your kink.

  • Consent

Check your partner is happy to participate and ready to explore. Wax play can be a wonderful, sensual experience, rapidly bringing your play partner into a state of deep, relaxed trust and enjoyment- even sub-space – but it should never be a surprise or something endured.

  • Prepare

An oil massage is a great way to get your partner relaxed and ready for a sensual experience. It also makes a fantastic barrier, so that afterwards the wax will be easier to remove.

  • Keep your distance

When you light the candle and start to drop the hot wax onto your partner’s skin, start from high up. The distance will allow the wax drops a moment to cool as they are falling, so you can begin with a gentler sensation of warmth. Some areas are more sensitive, like the groin, nipples and buttocks. Good starting areas are the back or thighs. Each body is different. As your playmate gets used to the sensation you can experiment with bringing the candle closer. Avoid the eyes, face and hair for safety.

  • What to do with wax

You can drop the wax in individual droplets or use a jug to pour a hot stream. You can circle, make patterns (flowers or initials are fun) or focus on making a wax cast of their chest.

  • Not hard core enough?

For the more intense masochist, warm the skin up first with a vampire glove or pinwheel- the heightened sensitivity will make the wax feel hotter. You can also predicament-play, by balancing a lit candle between buttocks, and inform them that if they move it will all pour down into their most sensitive areas (unless they really do want this, take it away before it happens.)

  • Finishing up

Don’t neglect the sensual aspects of wax removal when you are finished. You can buy a plastic or wooden knife, purpose designed for wax removal, which you can slowly (and safely) scrape across their skin to finish your session. A hot soapy shower makes a great aftercare activity with your partner.
